Our newly seven year old…
Chelee January 29, 2012 6:06 am
Parenting is an ever-evolving journey. Had you asked me 20 years ago if I would let my seven year old get bright pink highlights, I’m pretty sure I would have emphatically said, “No way!” After all, I wasn’t allowed to get highlights (blonde highlights in my light brown hair) until I was in college–and even then my mom was none too pleased.
Katie changes everything, though. Katie has taught us to reprioritize. She has changed most of what we believe. It was less than four and a half years ago that Katie lay motionless in a hospital bed. She couldn’t open her eyes, wouldn’t respond to stimuli and we were told it was very likely she would be that way forever. When she did wake up three days later, she couldn’t do more than move her eyes. But Katie pulled herself out of that state and despite the brain damage she’d suffered, she learned to sit up, move and talk again before hospital staff could even arrange for the therapies they said she’d need.
See, our Katelyn is our hero. She doesn’t give up. She’s brave. She endures. She has Crohn’s disease, and suffered a stroke at age two. Somehow, she’s grown into the beautiful, thriving girl you see below. So when she asks for hot pink streaks in her hair, who are we to say no? Katie knows that she wants to live life to the fullest, and every day she does. I think she’s earned it.

I’ve started writing on HubPages! :) I’ve only submitted one article so far, but have quite a few in the works….most photography-related of course!

The link is in the side navigation over there ———-> but I’ve been updating it, ready to get some “likes!” Our 100th “liker” gets a free full session, images included. I need a screenshot, so the first person to send me a screenshot of 100 or more “likes” gets the session! :D

Vintage Santa
Chelee December 16, 2011 6:46 am
Just a preview of our new Vintage processing option. Yes, I’ve always been a fan of clean processing but a secret lover of black & white as well as retro camera and film effects. :D I’ve never offered any sort of more creative processing, but for 2012, I will be. So just a taste for now! :)
Backups for your backups…
Chelee December 10, 2011 5:44 pm
I’m aware that a large majority of people do not back up their digital image files and it scares me; I really feel badly for someone when I hear that they lost their hard drive and that it took five years worth of family pictures/movies with it!! For amateur photographers and hobbiests, I always recommend an external hard drive. They are affordable and easy to use. They do fail, though. So either keep your images on your computer’s hard drive AND on the external, or burn a copy of you pictures to DVDs or an online back-up service periodically.
I had an external failure about a year ago. Luckily I was running two and had mirrored them by copying all my data to both. It was still scary though, because with my luck, the second was likely to fail before I had a chance to back IT up to a new external! ;) After that issue I decided to take the plunge and purchase a NAS device or RAID array. I settled on a RAID-like array, called a Drobo. It was a large investment but I figured it would end the constant parade of externals I was always buying as my space needs continue to grow. I bought four 2gb Seagate Barracuda drives for my Drobo and before long, I was off and running. I disconnected my externals and happily was living my life.
Until one morning when my Drobo (with over $800 invested in it) wouldn’t mount. My computer couldn’t read it. Neither could any of the other PCs in the house. Terrified, I ordered a new Drobo from Amazon and had it overnighted. I moved my four hard drives into it and waited….same problem. It took me several days of online research and several calls to Data Robotics to realize that the issue wasn’t that my files weren’t there, but that the Master File Table (which tells the computer *where* the files are) was corrupt. I had various options to fix it and tried several, but none seemed to work. Finally I found a link to a program called ZAR and to my great relief, ZAR was able to (slowly) rebuild the MFT and repair whatever issues my Drobo was experiencing.
My Drobo is working well again and aside from the sidecar files (that store my edits) from my latest sessions being corrupt, I’m back in business and getting caught up. But, now I don’t really trust my Drobo and have discovered that Data Robotics doesn’t recommend using a Drobo (or any RAID array) for one’s ONLY back-up solution. For now I’m backing up my back-ups to a couple of 1TB externals I bought in my pre-Drobo days. Eventually I plan to add a true NAS device for back-up but until then, I’m looking at adding a 3gb internal to my PC as another line of back-up.
Moral of the story, make sure you have at least two copies of any image files (or other files for that matter!) that you value. Someday you may be glad you did!!

New backdrops!
Chelee November 22, 2011 6:09 am
I’m so excited about a new backdrop manufacturer I found! I’m constantly on the look-out for quality backdrops that are *different* from what you usually see in-studio and I think this one (and the others I purchased) fit the bill perfectly! I’m still a fan of simple, subtle solids (currently have charcoal, white, chestnut and crimson) but I’m loving these funky new “urban” designs! They are great for teens but work well with kids and pups too–just need some attitude! :D
Santa Claus is Coming to San Tan Valley | Pictures with Santa!!
Chelee November 20, 2011 2:53 am
I’ve been getting a lot of questions about this, so I thought I’d give a heads up! I’m running a little later this year but better late than never! :D Yes, Santa pictures, right here in San Tan Valley! Why deal with the mall when you can come to my quiet studio for a private session? Everyone’s welcome–kids, dogs…kids and dogs….kids or dogs! I know I can’t wait to photography my OWN kids and dogs with our fabulous Santa!!
We have two dates available: Dec. 3rd and Dec. 10th from 10am to 7pm each day. I have a limited number of openings, so call me right away if you need to book! 480.280.4408 (I’ve been having issues with the 480.788.4626 number so I’m not giving it out anymore.)
You’ll be able to choose from a full session with a Santa visit/photos integrated or a mini-session just to visit with Santa (and get your Santa photos!). We have two background options planned to choose from (simple and elaborate). And if you don’t celebrate Santa and/or Christmas, we have a Santa-less “winter” option as well for your winter holiday photos! :D

I’ve been keeping this relatively secret but it’s time for the big announcement! :D I’ve completely revamped my home studio in order to accomodate taking some pet photography clients!! I’m thrilled as this is something I’ve wanted to do for a very long time! The studio is now downstairs, which will make visiting easier on clients with small children as well. Win-win! :D
I am so far behind posting sessions here that it is not even funny! The same can be said about my Facebook page! I apologize…one of these days I will get caught up. At least I’m busy–that’s always a blessing!! :D

Holiday Hours & Deadlines
Chelee August 29, 2011 9:31 pm
It’s that time of year again–holiday portraits are right around the corner! Please call 2-3 weeks in advance to book your holiday session–return clients, referrals and voucher-holders are given first priority in the schedule but I have a handful of additional sessions available.
The Studio will be closed Oct. 15-23 and Dec. 21-28. The deadline for digital holiday orders is Dec. 17th (allow an extra 7-10 days for prints) so please request your session early enough so we can deliver your portraits on time! :)
Thank you for your support!
Chelee May 21, 2011 4:39 pm
I have to thank my wonderful clients and their families for their support during this difficult time. While I absolutely love what I do, I’ve decided to take a bit of a breather and scale back my business for the remainder of this year. I have a limited number of sessions available each month, and previous clients, referrals and voucher holders will be given priority.
Remember, your KGB vouchers expire July 13th and your BWM vouchers expire November 11th. Please call 2-3 weeks in advance so I can fit you in!
Annoucement!!
Chelee March 24, 2011 10:08 am
Due to the unexpected death of Chelee’s mother following a short illness, Castles & Cupcakes will temporarily be closed to new clients through July 31st, 2011.
April through July, Castles & Cupcakes will only accept new clients who have pre-purchased KGB or BuyWithMe vouchers or previous clients.
All vouchers WILL be honored by Chelee personally.
Please e-mail or call to schedule your session to take place before you voucher expires–remember to call at least two weeks in advance of when you’d like your session so that we can best accomodate your requested date/time.

New Year + Great Plans = Lots of Excitement!
Chelee January 3, 2011 7:38 am
We have some exciting things planned for 2011! Some of them I can’t share details about yet, but one thing I can share is that I’m going to be testing out all four of our new sets in the next couple of weeks, with some really adorable kiddos whose mommies I know from a group we’re in. I can’t wait to share the results of the sessions!
I also was recently crowned the San Tan Valley examiner for Examiner.com! I’ve wanted this position for quite a while and finally got word back right before Christmas. I am going to be writing about community and neighborhood events in the San Tan Valley/Queen Creek area. E-mail me if you know of a person or business I should feature! (It looks like for now I’ll be keeping my East Valley Photography examiner role, as well as another new one called San Tan Valley Restaurant examiner!
I will be unveiling a brand new blog around the end of January. It will be my new place to post about everything I do so I can keep this blog focused on the photography I do for Castles & Cupakes. I had to choose and direction a I think this will be a good one. I also hope to start to do some justice to my local photograph-a-day sites as well. :D
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
New Look for 2011!!

And what better way to show it off than with a pic of these two adorable little princesses…er, I mean, sisters! :D
Oh, for the love of…
Chelee December 20, 2010 12:53 pm
….blogging.
I love blogging. I really do, although you wouldn’t know it by reading this blog! I started blogging in 2002, mainly for myself and to share my thoughts with online friends I’d met through e-mail lists and message boards. I have my archives in a text file somewhere, all the way back to the beginning. I quit for a couple years because more and more people were getting internet savvy and I didn’t want my husband continuing to search his name (sorry honey!) or my parents or in-laws to find the more personal posts. I took a couple years off, lost touch with almost all my blogging friends and then set up a private blog on Livejournal. I think all of 2-3 people read it regularly, but that’s OK. It’s my diary and best of all, it’s completely private.
So that brings me to this blog. The past couple years, I’ve found myself longing to blog publicly again…of course about things that aren’t too personal. I very easily slip into TMI-mode while blogging, so I get caught up in trying to be honest and genuine, while holding back a bit…and that just doesn’t come across as honest or genuine. I want to share my life with clients, friends and family. I want you to read this and know what I’m like…and be excited to meet me (not scared! ;) ). I just struggle with how much is enough (to share) and how much is too much.
The obvious answer would be to only blog my photography here…with the occasional personal image and accompanying tidbit. I have all but stopped blogging client sessions before I show proofs, because it just was starting to feel like it was messing up the process for me and my clients. Once the proofs are out and images ordered and delivered, there seems little point to blog the images…except for saying “Hey, look at these great shots I made!” or “Look at these adorable kids I had the pleasure of photographing for the third time!” But, I have a portfolio website to showcase my work and adorable clients. The blog is redundant, in my mind. I could postonnly personal images here but that seems silly…this blog shares a URL with all my business information…so only personal pictures? In my experience, prospective clients don’t want to see 4001 recent pictures of JMK (just my kids). That would just scream “this photographer has never had a client” and that wouldn’t be very good for business. Yet as photographers and business people, my cronies and I are continuously told…”You MUST have a blog! You must posts lots of images at least twice per week. You will NOT continue to be successful in these times if you don’t!”
Oh what to do?
(to be continued)
